Kevin Sullivan, the legendary WWE wrestler known as the Prince of Darkness and The Taskmaster, has passed away at the age of 74. A significant figure in professional wrestling, Sullivan’s career spanned several decades, leaving a lasting impact on the industry. Born on October 26, 1949, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Sullivan began as an amateur wrestler in Boston before transitioning to the professional circuit in the early 1970s. Initially wrestling under names like Johnny West and The Boston Battler, Sullivan eventually adopted the dark, cult-like persona of the Prince of Darkness in the 1980s, influenced by heavy metal bands and the era’s satanic panic.

Sullivan’s Army of Darkness, his crew of wrestlers who dressed like a cult and entered the ring to the sounds of Deep Purple or Jeff Beck, became infamous. His feuds with wrestling legends like Hulk Hogan, Dusty Rhodes, and Barry Windham solidified his place as one of the most compelling “heels” (villains) in wrestling history. In the 1990s, Sullivan became a key figure in World Championship Wrestling (WCW), where he continued to push creative boundaries, particularly in his rivalries with Hogan and Randy Savage.
Although Sullivan retired from in-ring competition in 1997, he remained active behind the scenes as a booker, shaping storylines and characters that would influence the next generation of wrestlers. WWE acknowledged his contributions, calling him “a unique and influential figure in sports-entertainment history.”
