Mike Lynch, a renowned British technology entrepreneur, is currently missing after the luxury yacht Bayesian sank during a severe storm off Sicily’s northern coast. Lynch, 59, who gained fame for selling his company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011, was celebrating his recent legal victory. Lynch had been acquitted of fraud charges in the U.S. after a prolonged legal battle. The ill-fated voyage on the Bayesian, a 183-foot yacht renowned for its towering 75-meter aluminum mast, was intended as a celebratory trip with family and colleagues.

The storm struck around 4 a.m., causing the yacht to capsize and sink to a depth of over 160 feet. Lynch’s daughter, Hannah, 18, and several other high-profile individuals, including Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and Chris Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance, are among those still missing. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was among the 15 people rescued, including a 1-year-old girl saved by colleague Charlotte Golunski.
The search and rescue operation has faced challenges, including difficulties accessing the sunken yacht due to obstructing furniture. The yacht, owned by Bacares through her company Revtom, was one of the largest luxury sailing yachts in the world. The Bayesian had been a symbol of Lynch’s success, named after the statistical theory used in his software.
