List of Things You Need for a New Baby- an Ultimate Guide

Now all you need to do is follow this list. However, if you’re a friend of someone who’s expecting, then feel free to gift a few items from this list. Baby shopping can be exhausting and your close ones need all the help they can have. 

Newborn baby shopping for a list of things you need for a new baby 

Feeding 

In case you’re planning on breastfeeding you do not need any baby supplies. 

In case you’re not then these are the few supplies that you will need in the feeding department. 

For feeding breast milk-

  • A breast pump that helps you pump your milk for your baby to feed on.
  • Milk storage bottles. 
  • Breast pads so they soak any spillage when you leak. 
  • You will need nursing bras. When you’re purchasing a bra during your pregnancy make sure you order one size more than your current cup size. 
  • Buy a lotion for your nipples which helps with soreness. Make sure you take a quick recommendation from your doctor on this. 
  • Get your baby a nursing pillow so that you don’t have to clean up afterward. 
  • You’ll need burp cloths.
  • You’ll need baby bibs. 

For formula feeding-

  • Several baby bibs should top your list of things you need for a new baby.
  • Burp cloths
  • Nipple and bottle brush for your baby. 
  • The formula you wish to feed. 
  • A thermal bottle carrier to keep the food warm if that’s how your baby prefers it. 

Diapers 

For reusable diapers 

  • You should purchase 4 to 5 pairs of reusable diapers. 
  • At least 8 reusable covers will be needed. 
  • Purchase changing pads. 
  • Get a baby lotion or baby creams after consulting your doctor to prevent baby rash. 
  • Get velcros or safety pins to tie and secure the baby diaper. Avoid safety pins for this purpose. They may hurt your baby. 
  • Get disposable wipes or other washcloths for wiping your baby’s bottoms. 

For disposable diapers 

  • Keep read at least 3 boxes of new disposal diapers for your baby. However, do not go overboard with diaper shopping.
  • Get changing pads. 
  • You’ll need a baby bottom cream to prevent rash on your baby’s bottoms. 
  • You’ll need disposable wipes to clean your baby’s bottoms for disposable diapers as well. 

Clothing 

Well, as a new parent we suggest you go creative here. A lot of mothers dress their babies in their baby clothes. Some mothers like to dress their babies in handmade clothes which they made for their babies. 

However, even if you’re getting creative there are some basic clothing you should have for your baby. 

  • Have at least 7 pairs of onesies (that’s one for each day of the week). Have a good mix of long and short sleeves for your baby to be comfortable in. 
  • Keep nightgowns ready. 
  • Stretchy sleepers with zippers are a lifesaver for mommies who have just given birth. Therefore, this is something you can consider investing in. 
  • Get enough pants because you’ll need to keep changing them. 
  • You can get newborn hats if you’re planning to take your baby out for a stroll in the pram. 
  • Get some socks and boots to wear with the outfits you buy. The feet need to be protected if you plan on going out of your house with your baby. 
  • You can invest in scratch mittens as a precautionary measure so that your baby does not scratch their face. 
  • Get your baby warm clothes for winters such as jackets or cardigans. 
  • You can also consider getting a snowsuit for your baby. They look very cute on babies. 
  • You will need washing powder for washing all those baby clothes that you shopped for. 
  • Get some occasion wear clothes for your baby that they can wear for dressing up. 

Blankets 

Blankets are essential to keep your baby warm in winters or any season. It is essential for you to not let other people hold your baby without a blanket covering your baby. 

Germs and bacteria can easily transfer to your baby when they are so young. Therefore, it is better to be careful. The blanket acts as a protective outer covering for your baby. 

  • Get at least 3 large cotton blankets 
  • You can also consider getting smaller blankets that can act as burps or receiving blankets. 

Bathtime 

Baby bathtimes and fun and exciting for both baby and mamas. There are some essentials that your baby needs during bathtime to have covered. 

  • You’ll need a gentle and mild baby cleanser
  • You’ll need a baby hairbrush to brush your baby’s hair. Make sure that it has very soft bristles. 
  • Get some washcloths for your baby. 
  • You’ll need towels to wipe your baby.
  • Consider getting a baby tub for your baby to take a bath in. 
  • You could get a water duck your baby can have fun with or any other squeaky toy you feel like. 

Bedtime 

Bedtime is important for new norms and therefore you must provide your baby all the comfort they need to fall asleep well. 

For when you’re using a baby crib- 

  • You need a stable crib and a comfortable mattress for the crib.
  • You’ll need waterproof covers for the mattress. 
  • Get some fitted crib sheets for your baby’s crib. 
  • Lightweight blankets and sleep sacks are also items for you to consider for your baby. 

For when you’re sleeping with your baby- 

Falling asleep with your baby unsupervised is not recommended as you might roll over on your baby unconsciously in your sleep or smother them by mistake while feeding. 

Therefore, a baby crib is always recommended. However, if you do plan on sleeping with your baby supervised, here’s a list of things you’ll be needing.

  • A firm mattress for you and your baby.
  • Light comforters and sleep sacks.
  • Cribsheets and waterproof pads for your baby.
